“Keep your thoughts positive, because your thoughts become your words.
Keep your words positive, because your words become your behavior.
Keep your behavior positive, because your behavior becomes your habits.
Keep your habits positive, because your habits become your values.
Keep your values positive, because your values become your destiny.” ~Gandhi
I’ve heard a lot about “toxic positivity” lately. And I’ve also been called a Pollyanna a time or ten in my life. But as an empath, a prophetic dreamer, and one who walks with a foot in the world these days I feel a little pulled in every direction. It’s hard to follow what Gandhi says and keep every thought positive, when the world is tearing each other apart on every outlet imaginable.
But there is a better way.

We can notice our internal landscape and carefully prune the outer landscape intake. In fact, this is what I did for decades to ensure that I was a clean vessel, a pure instrument that heard from the highest source of all without worrying about outside influence.
We have fasts for our body, so why don’t we hear about fasts for the mind? When was the last time you went on a social media detox? A regular media detox? A negative person detox? A negative thought detox?
It’s time. If you are getting sucked in to polarizing debates, thinking you are being helpful just stating the facts because Becky and her opinion is different than yours and she is wrong, well, that conflict my love, is causing tension.
Gandhi also said: “You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.” For every story you read about someone hurting someone else there are ten stories untold about people helping others. For every thing that there is to fear, there are hundreds of things to bring wonderment and awe, if you go looking for them. Part of the issues we are facing today is a lack of focus in the proper direction.
“Worry is just using your imagination in the wrong direction,” Abraham Hicks said, and I know that the horror that we can bring about in our minds through negative thinking can wear the proverbial carpet thin in our neural pathways, but if we focus on more than survival and instead notice the small things of beauty, create the random acts of kindness such as holding the door for one another, allowing traffic to cut in line, providing meals to those in need, giving to charity organizations, and being kind to each other and allowing a difference of opinion without trying to convince, the world will become more tolerant, compassionate, and the space that we take up energetically will match the available reach that has been carved out but we are ignoring in the current state of confusion, conflict, and resultant chaos.
It is the small things that matter, the day-to-day actions, thoughts, and habits that impact us greatly and cause us to have more room for caring when we see the big things like war, terror, freedom infringements.
If we look beyond ourselves, past a scarcity belief mindset and toward an attitude of what can I give, how can I learn, what is my contribution and how is this situation going to be resolved for a win/win betterment of all, then we can begin to realize what Gandhi was speaking about.
Learning to let go of the need for retribution or making things right when someone doesn’t agree with our stance can be hard as well. But another tenet of Gandhi’s mentality was, “an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.”
To live in a state of inner peace means to accept that perhaps someone has a different viewpoint, perhaps they have even done wrong by us, but retaliation is not the solution. Two wrongs only make two wrongs, they zoom all parties faster and further into the wrong direction. Keeping oneself in a peaceful state of mind, seeing that there is only hope to be gained from compassion, strength from forgiveness, and a path forward in seeking coherence.
